What if…XBOX Could’ve Played DREAMCAST Games?

xdreamKotaku has an amazing little history lesson up about how late SEGA chairman Isao Okawa pushed for the Xbox to play Dreamcast games in effort to have SEGA fans migrate to the new console (especially in Japan).

Former Microsoft Executive, now a professor at Japan’s Keio University, Sam Furukawa tweeted:

“Before Mr. Okawa passed away…he visited Gates several times, to see if it would be possible to add Dreamcast compatibility into the Xbox.”]

Apparently, Okawa offered SEGA assets to the big old MS but sticking point in the discussions was Dreamcast online play – Okawa wanted it in and Microsoft did not want burden the cost.

You gotta wonder what would have happened to the Xbox in Japan if it had exclusive SEGA support. I always thought the Xbox was an overgrown DC anyway. I wish I could’ve been older at the time of the DC and tried out the online play back in the day.
