Demo Impressions: Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing
The Sonic & SEGA ALL-Star Racing demo is 1.03 GB in size and it features one track, 2 characters (Sonic and Banjo), Local 2-player split-screen multi-player, and 3 difficulty levels. The demo is currently available on Xbox 360 for Gold Members and will hopefully arrive on PSN by the end of the week. The footage is from the Xbox 360 version.
Sumo Digital has done a fantastic job of creating a bright and colorful atmosphere and creating a sensation of speed.
The quality of title so far seems far better than the previous Superstar Tennis title. You can use a variety of power-ups, pull off tricks to boost, and drift around corners.
Loved:
- Local split-screen! Sweet
- Great sensation of speed and wonderful HD graphics
- The title feels like a combination of Outrun and Mario Kart
- Great in-game music (so far)
- Trick and drift boosts
- Super moves don’t seem to break the title
- Three difficulty levels
Meh:
- The announcer wasn’t annoying or anything…he was just there
- Sometimes it was hard to tell if I was hit by an item
Hated:
- A few times I flew off the level and couldn’t tell why.
- The character selection is slim. Only 2 characters? And only 1 SEGA one? BAH!
Overall:
I have been really hoping that this title will bring a solid kart racing to the high definition consoles. I found the last Mario Kart slow and a bit clunky and a bit over-rated. SEGA has always been a stellar publisher of racing titles. So far this one seems to carry that lineage well.
The controls feel nice and I like how Sumo Digital gave the title a “SEGA” racing feel. Say what you will about the choice of characters but now that I’ve played the title I’m impressed.
The sensation of speed is great. Worth a download? For sure.
