According to 1UP’s Frank Cifaldi the footage above is from a bootleg SNES title that was a rather “ extensive hack of Sunsoft’s Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos, a game that already shares more than a passing resemblance to Sonic.”

The hack was completed in 1996 (14 years ago) by a Peruvian outfit called the Twin Eagles Group and they aptly titled their hack Sonic 4 and sold it on the black market.

I gotta say SONIC busting Mario out cages is pretty cool but the sounds effects and music are pretty bad. And I guess I’ll play Devil’s Advocate here and state: “even in the Super Nintendo hack -- Sonic is chubby, has brown eyes, and spins his legs in a circle when he runs.”
