Sega Rummage: Sonic Robo Blast 2

SR

[I am using the un-patched version of Sonic Robo Blast meaning that the version used in this is outdated and not as good as the patched version, Thanks for Sonict for pointing this out]

Welcome to my first edition of Sega Rummage in which I analyse some more obscure official/unofficial Sega content. Today I am going to be exploring a fan made Sonic game named Sonic Robo Blast. Is it one of those crappy pirated Sonic games you find on various other consoles? We’ll find out!

This game runs on the computer and can be found on the Sonic Robo Blast site. When I ran the game no problems were evident and the title screen was fairly impressive it had basic things like single player, options, multiplayer and I am quite enthusiastic so far!

Nice title screen, Eh?

For this article I am going to be testing single player and stating my thoughts on it, and hopefully the game will be decent. Upon getting into gameplay you can choose your character! (Awesome) These characters are Sonic, Tails and Knuckles (There may be more to unlock) There is also a statistics menu in which has an image that looks like an emblem with “(0/40)” beside it, this game certainly looks promising! I decided to go for Sonic after all her is the protagonist! and the first zone you encounter is Sunflower Hill Zone. This zone looks very similar to Green Hill and looks fairly attractive!

The games environment is rendered in fully 3-d where-as objects, enimies and Sonic are all sprites, that change corresponding to the angle of the camera. I’m pretty sure this is known as a 3-d Vertex effect? The game is actually very fun and certainly looks like Sonic X-treme (A cancelled Saturn game), and to my surprise Sonic does run relatively fast and you do get the feeling of speed. The level design is a bit messy and some segments prevent you from running fast which is a pity. But overall the game is quite fun so far. The game uses the same Act/Zone system as Sonic1 meaning you go from Act 1 to Act 2 then you go to a boss.

A later on level in the game, Farily impressive.

Throughout the levels you can find these miniature emerald power-ups. When collected you will be taken to a bonus stage at the  end of the stage. And to say the least these stages are rather annoying, the aim is to collect a certain amount of rings the problem is that Sonic is to fast to be confined in a small space and it will more than likely annoy you. This is not a major annoyance but I presume you would need to collect the emeralds to become Super Sonic later in the game.

After you have completed both acts it will be time for you to fight a boss. The first boss is off course Robotnik and this bosss is really easy (Probably due to the fact it’s the first boss! All you simply do is jump and hit him. He does throw projectiles at you but these are easily dodged and pose no real threat!

I’m not going to go any further with this article as it would take forever, And I am lazy. Anyway I hope you enjoyed it and the 20 in Master System Rummage is coming soon (I just need to wait for it to arrive!)

I’d hate to break the news to you, but you are using an old version of SRB2. the current version is 2.0.4 and it is loads better than the version that you just reviewed. There are still a few design issues with some levels, but it is still being worked on.

Actually I used the newest version on the official site,
Those images were taken of the actual site, and are just used to give a rough idea.

And if I have used an older version, it doesn’t matter entirely as I can modify the post stating that it is an earlier version.

I hope you enjoyed the article though, and I find this game to be rather brilliant!

Sorry After checking the site, I realized that I did in fact use an earlier version without downloading the patch.
I will edit the post stating that this is the version without the patch!

Thanks for the heads up mate!
