Error of My Ways

Back in the day, kids my age had a “black and white” attitude to gaming; you either had a Sega Megadrive or a SNES. If you had a SNES – the Megadrive sucked. If you had a Megadrive – the SNES sucked. Such was this bitter competition, that we frequently assaulted our SNES-owning friends with verbal nastiness i.e. “your fat Italian plumber aint got nothin’ on our supersonic, spiny blue mammal.” Or “A supersonic hedgehog?! That doesn’t even make sense! Anyway, it’s a well known fact that all Italians can jump really high!” It goes on.
In reality, most people I knew couldn’t afford both consoles, which was usually the starting point for such instances. Unfortunately, this vicious cycle continued, and when it came to choosing between the Saturn, PlayStation and N64, my choice was obvious…
Yes that’s right, The Jay Man, toiling away on a Sega fansite… he chose the PlayStation. It just seemed to me that the Saturn wasn’t capitalising on what made the Megadrive so good in Europe. All my favourite games were confirmed never to have true sequels on the new disk-based console, so I turned to the darkside…
Final Fantasy VII teased me into submission, as did other titles like Abes Odyssey, Metal Gear Solid etc. 3D was the future for me, and the Saturn wasn’t embracing it. However, I had a great time with the PlayStation. So much so, in fact, that I decided to abandon Sega yet again as the new generation dawned. This time, it was a lot harder because the Dreamcast actually looked awesome. Regardless, I held out for the PS2 with all its promises of more Metal Gear and more Final Fantasy.
In this sense, I felt partly responsible for Sega’s console developing demise and, a few years ago, embarked on a mission to experience the systems I left behind (thanks Ebay!). The result? – I loved both consoles. It seemed that a much older and infinitely wiser Jay Man now had the capacity to appreciate the unknown games of those generations. Needless to say, I couldn’t rectify the error of my ways. It’s great to have all the consoles I’ve ever wanted, but it would’ve been better to have queued for hours outside Electronics Boutique, only to carry home a brand, spanking new Sega Saturn.
What can I say? I wish I had a time machine, but that’s not going to happen, so here I am at Segashiro to beg the Sega fan community for forgiveness from a life of debauchery. Also, if Segata Sanshiro is still alive, which many believe to be true, he’s gonna be really pissed with me!

Forgiven. I traded in both my SNES and Megs Drive for Playstation back in the day
*disappointed head shake*
I really didn’t see the appeal of the non-Sega consoles. They didn’t have any Sega games on them!
I kid (sort of). Metal Gear was really quite good. And Suikoden. But outside of that I never saw or played anything I wanted on the PS1 or the N64. Likewise for the PS1 until after the DC’s demise.
Suikoden was amazing…I ended up trading in that Playstation for a Saturn.
Well, I also wasnt really exposed to any Saturn gossip because I didnt know anyone who went for Sega. I seen my cousin playing Resident Evil for Saturn and went and got it for the PS1… that was peak of my Saturn desire; a game that came out on PS1 first
AHHH! SEGATA SANSHIRO!!!??? NOOOOOOOO!
*Judo throw into computer monitor*
To be very honest, SEGA made some serious missteps in North America. I can remember being the only kid who had a Saturn.
While everyone else was playing Jet Moto – I was playing near arcade perfect ports of Street Fighter Alpha 2
I was one of those kids playing jet moto with my friends. I knew one person who had a dreamcast, but he only had one game for it. I never heard much about it then.
