The Price of Curiosity

You cant afford me...

So, what is the price of curiosity? In this case it’s a cool 100 quid. Hailed as one of the most overlooked videogames of all time and arguably the greatest game to grace the Saturn, Panzer Dragoon Saga is finally in my grubby little mitts.

Unfortunately, I’m a busy guy, so I haven’t had the pleasure of playing through the entire game yet but I’m still impressed as I have just began playing disc 3. The graphics are the best I’ve seen on Saturn and, whilst being technically dated, have a pleasant artistic edge that’s capable of obliterating the blemishes of age.

However,  the on-foot gameplay sections are almost painful as it’s been out performed even by games released as early as 1996 but it’s the battle system thats truly unique for me. However, before this escalates into a full blown review, I’ll have to have the courtesy of finishing the game first. For now, although it may be an unconscious attempt at justifying the £100 price tag, it’s pretty darn good.

I won’t argue it may be the best game on the Saturn but NiGHTS and Burning Rangers do look a lot better! :)

NiGHTS and Burning Rangers are a lot more colorful and vibrant, but I’m not sure whether they match the graphical horsepower of PDS.

I also mentioned that they are the best I’VE seen which, in retrospect doesnt matter that much considering I’ve never played Burning Rangers. I must check it out though

Panzer Dragoon Saga is very much worth the price tag. Amazing game… And yes, you should indeed also play Burning Rangers.

I would be inclined to lean towards Virtua Fighter 2 for best (3D) graphics, if just for the character models, though PDS does a really good job of making things look good on a small amount of polygons. The effects look great too.

The one that WOULD have blown everything else on the Saturn away, of course, is Shenmue…

  • The Jay Man says:

Yeah I remember seeing beta footage of shenmue on the Saturn ages ago, it looked pretty impressive. Games like burning rangers and PDS stand as a testiment to what could have been done on the Saturn with a little care and precision

I have yet to play my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga but when I do, I video review will be going up.

I have tried out the battle system and it is intriguing and the art style/language of the title is beyond aging.

Virtua Fighter 2 has a clean look…it even uses relatively high resolution textures.

  • DarrenIndeed says:

Yup. Oh, and of course Shining Force 3. Good times…

I’ve been trying to get back into it but curses for MW2! So damn addictive, especially when all your mates are urging you to play on til the early hours.
