What is the SOPA and What About Canada?
The internet definitely shares some similarities with the wild west but the free trade of opinion and ideas is something worth saving. I haven’t had the time to fully grasp the full ramifications but the video above does a good job as a primer.
If you are in Canada, like me, and are thinking what the heck does it have to do with me? Check out this tidbit from the CBC:
“SOPA ignores the fact that IP addresses are assigned by regional, not national, entities. The American Registry for Internet Numbers allocates IP addresses for Canada (both for individual customers and governments) and 20 Caribbean nations, as well as the U.S. However, under SOPA, the IP addresses it allocates would be considered “domestic,” i.e., U.S., IP addresses…SOPA effectively grants the U.S. jurisdiction over some foreign websites…The long arm of U.S. law reaches into Canada using SOPA.”
I don’t advocate piracy but this potentially very scary. For example, we could be “shut down” for running video reviews or streaming live gameplay content.
