Daytona USA Coming Back to Consoles?

A classification entry was unearthed by XBLA fans from SEGA for Daytona USA! Sweet! The entry specifies that it is a multi-platform release.

One has to wonder if it will be an upgraded version of the already stellar Dreamcast version or will it be a tweaked iteration of SEGA Classic Racing?! That is of course assuming it is coming to XBLA and PSN and not to something like the iPhone. This random thought crossed my mind but SEGA should also add 3D support to their Arcade and DC remasters (just throwing that out there).

It is good to see that SEGA has managed to snag the rights to use the name once again. Hopefully we will hear an announcement soon! Oh, and can we have some SEGA RACE TV?

Send Love to the SEGAGAGA Translation Team!

SEGAGAGA is a game I have always wanted to play ever since first reading about it many years ago. A quirky Japanese RPG where fans can control the fate of SEGA is the perfect type of love letter to hardcore fans of the company.

As it was released in the last dying days of the Dreamcast – it stands as one of the final SEGA releases prior to merging with SAMMY. Hopefully, fans in the West will finally get to experience this funny and heartfelt title as the translation team behind the “English Patch”  for SEGAGAGA is hoping to have the title done in the next year – if they can get some programming help.

Dreamcast turns 12 in North America!

9.9.99 – 12 years ago…I remember walking into a game shop and seeing the clerks play Soul Caliber on the DC. I knew that the system was something special right away considering the DC version blew the pants off the arcade edition.

By the time Street Fighter 3 and Crazy Taxi were released I knew I had to have one (I know have 2). Thank you for 12 years of active service! Here is a fun fact, the DC didn’t have an operating system – it was loaded on from the game discs. This helped the system stay on top of updates and new effects!

Yes, it is still thinking!

Around the Web: Red Spot Games and NG:Dev Talk About the DC Scene

If you simply hit the play button above you are watching Fabian from SEGA bust out a copy of Red Spot Games Sturmwind to play with Destructoid – that was in March and it was awesome. However, recently Gamasutra has published a great three page article speaking to the teams about pros and cons for developing for the DC. René Hellwig spoke about the ease of the platform:

“Making games for modern platforms sounds easy at first, but [then] you need to find a publisher that has faith in the quality of the product, and then we need approval by the hardware manufacturer which takes time…On the DC, however, we don’t need to go through these hassles, which makes it easier for us get a game on [the] system quick.”

Developing for the older systems isn’t easy however because sometimes the userbase isn’t strong as it could be, for example Fast Striker only received 60% of the orders of Last Hope. Read the rest of this entry »

NG:DEV.TEAM Bringing Gun Lord to Dreamcast & NEO GEO

I was just thinking that I need a new Dreamcast game and while I should probably pick NG:DEV.TEAM’s Fast Striker first, I love knowing and now – thanks to the screens – seeing the Gun Lord exists. By all accounts, Gun Lord looks to be a Contra/Turrican style shooter with run and jump mechanics.

This one will be coming to the DC hardware and will even be getting an MVS Neo Geo cart meaning that it could sneak into an arcade. That’s pretty cool.

You gotta love that this team is so hardcore. Check out their website to see the teaser site and hear a clip of music from the game. Oh, and don’t forget to show your love on their Facebook page.

YU Suzuki at GDC Says, to effect, SEGA May Let Me Make Shenmue 3!

Aside from being a genius and the mother of videogames…Yu Suzuki knows how to stoke the flames of the SEGA fanbase.

According to Joystiq, the legend made mention of Shenmue 3 stating that he believes SEGA may let him make the game if it fits under budget requirements. Joystiq writes:

“During his GDC 2011 panel, Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki said “I think Sega will let me make it,” referring to the long-awaited Shenmue 3. However, it’s not a guarantee. He couched the discussion by saying it’s contingent on budget issues — by the way, Suzuki said that Shenmue cost $47 million to make, not the patently ridiculous $70 million Sega quoted.”

Hopefully, this will amount to an epic conclusion to our long-lost friend, Ryo! However, don’t be folled this is by no means a confirmation of any sorts.

Dreamcast Collection Now in Stores!

The DC Collection is now in stores for people that fear to tread in digital dollars. I am currently playing it for review of SEGA’s DLC offerings and the inclusion of Space Channel 5, Part 2 is probably the best thing about the package.

Anyone looking for extra content in the way of interviews or a front end menu will sadly be disappointed. It is a lean spartan repackage of the DLC offerings. The cost of the boxed edition however is only $30.

Now, is just me or is the Xbox 360 version of Crazy Taxi better than the PS3 one? Anyway, the complete listing of Crazy Taxi tunes to add to your custom soundtrack after the jump:  Read the rest of this entry »
