Sonic CD Launch Trailer [Updated]

It is kinda funny writing the words Launch Trailer for a game I played in 1996 (on the SEGA CD no less) but it is still way past cool.

What isn’t so cool is that I’m not sure if the game is actually landed on the networks yet.

[Update] SEGA has clarified the launch dates:

XBLA – December 14, 2011 (400 MSP)

PSN – December 14, 2011 in Europe, December 20, 2011 in North America ($5.00 / £3.59/ €4.49 / AUD$6.25)

iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) – December 14, 2011 ($4.99/ € 3.99/£2.99/AUD$5.49)

Android – Early 2012

Windows Phone – Early 2012

PC – date coming soon!

Sonic CD XBLA Features On-the-Fly Switching Between Hi-Res & Lo-Res Mode

This tidbit of news is coming out of a Kotaku PAX report – wherein they show the difference (albeit minor) between the optional lo-res and hi-res graphics in a video. They write:

“The attraction in this video is that players of the new version of Sonic CD can switch from old-school graphics to a polished high-res version with the tap of a button. I barely could notice it, until I started looking at the triangles. Look at those edges on those triangles, people! No more jagged edges!”

It’s cool that the option is there and I imagine the hi-res graphics will be quite nice in the “Mode 7″ style sections in the game. If you know what Mode 7 is and how it doesn’t really apply to Genesis but the SEGA CD and the effect – well done!

I would love to know if the “Hi-Res” mode is actually due to programming or if the Xbox 360 is just natively anti-aliasing everything.

Sonic Boom! Sonic’s SEGA CD Adventure Returning to All Major Platforms

SEGA released the details about the return of Sonic’s CD outing and it sounds pretty good – as long as you dig the Japanese/European soundtrack because it is the only one that is coming (I believe they are the same).

Haruki Satomi stated: “[a]sk any Sonic fan to name their favorite games, and Sonic CD always ranks near the top of their lists…Sonic CD marks an important chapter in Sonic’s history, bridging the gap between his oldest adventures and his new digital exploits like Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I. We’ve made sure the re-mastered edition has everything that Sonic fans want to see with all of the original colorful classic zones.”

The game will be getting widescreen support along with achievements and trophies as it is coming to all major platforms but the Wii – this again is due to the CD quality soundtrack.

“The beloved prequel to Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I is coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, iPhone and iPod touch, iPad, PC Digital Download, Android, and Windows Phone! Best of all, Sonic CD will be available for download in late 2011!

Well, at least my copy of the America version of Sonic CD isn’t completely out of date! Hit the jump for the Japanese intro to the original game:

Kojima Just Doesn’t Have Time to Do a Snatcher Sequel!

Kojima has been recognizing the cult classic of Snatcher quite a bit recently from showing off drafts of the game plan, developing Sdatcher with Suda 51 (buy his goddamn game, people!) and talking about the title to PSN blogs.

When asked during an interview, Kojima acknowledged that he just doesn’t have the time to do a follow-up to the title:

“I would love to do something like Snatcher but I do not have the time or the means to do so. But if anyone else would like to develop it, I would love it.”

The trick is that before any one does anything new with the series they need to remake it for a portable or give it an HD splash with Move/Kinect support. I don’t mean re-do the graphics…I mean get someone like UDON to re-draw them like Street Fighter 2 HD Remix.

I hope Monkey Paw games is listening! At least the game is open and being talked about!
